The City of London Police is the territorial police force responsible for law enforcement within the City of London, England. The City of London is the historic core and now primarily a financial business district, distinct from the rest of Greater London, which is covered by the Metropolitan Police[5].
The City of London Police operates with its headquarters temporarily located at the Guildhall, an arrangement that recalls its historical use of the same building from 1832 to 1840. An additional station was formerly located at Bishopsgate, which served as the eastern base, though this site has now closed as part of recent estate changes[5][2].
In February 2024, the City of London Corporation approved the development of a new operational Eastern base for the City of London Police at the Middlesex Street Estate. This new base will incorporate facilities in six former shop units on Gravel Lane and other estate areas, replacing previous locations such as Bishopsgate Police Station, and ensuring a visible policing presence in the area. The site will include personal safety training facilities and spaces for community engagement[2].
In addition to the new Eastern base, a new headquarters is being constructed at Salisbury Square, with completion planned for 2026 and occupation by City of London Police expected in 2027[2].
The City of London Police is one of the smallest territorial police forces in England and Wales by both area and workforce numbers and is governed by the Common Council of the City. The force is led by Commissioner Peter O’Doherty, who began serving in an interim capacity in late 2023 and is expected to be confirmed as permanent commissioner in 2024[5].
