Why was Ennerdale built where it is?

Ennerdale is a suburb of Johannesburg which was built in the 1970s in an attempt by local authorities to create a new kind of township for the coloured ethnic group (also referred to as Cape Coloureds). The aim was to achieve economic self-sufficiency, while ensuring racial segregation at the same time.
