The Rocks Police Station refers to a historic building located at 127–129 George Street, The Rocks, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.[1] Designed in the neo-classical style by Government Architect James Barnet and constructed in 1882 by W. Cains and Sons, it originally served as a police station before being repurposed.[1]
The building operated as a police station until 1974.[4] After several decades of varied uses and periods of vacancy, the former station was adaptively reused and transformed into a restaurant and bar, most recently Sergeant Lok.[1] The adaptive reuse project, led by architects Welsh + Major, received recognition for maintaining the historical integrity of the structure while introducing modern elements.[3] New dining spaces were created in former holding cells, charge rooms, muster room, and offices, while the old exercise yard became a commercial kitchen.[3] The project won the Australian Institute of Architects NSW Chapter heritage award in 2014.[4]
There is currently a functioning police station in The Rocks area at 132 George Street, which is operated by the NSW Police Force as part of the Sydney City Police Area Command.[6] This station is open 24 hours and serves The Rocks as well as nearby areas such as Barangaroo, Millers Point, and Dawes Point.[2]
